The Problem
The performance of the braking system on a mountain bike is of extreme
importance to a rider descending a mountain. Riding a bike down a
mountain slope can be very rough, with nearly vertical drops, rocks and
tree roots in the path, and brake control is critical to the speed and
the safety of the rider. Hayes Industrial Brake, Inc. in Mequon,
Wisconsin manufactures SpeedCheck Disc Brake calipers for market by
Diacompe, USA. As an alternative to the standard rubber brakes, disc
brakes provide smooth braking and better control of the bike.
Analyzing Real World Brake Factors
Daniel B. Conine, Research and Development Lab Supervisor, and
mechanical design engineer Curt Blaszczyk were responsible for testing
and refining the SpeedCheck Disc Brake. The disc brake was to be used
on fragile mounting components and Hayes was concerned with monitoring
and analyzing three real-world performance factors.
